Dojo Leader Academy I – Financial Management and the Sustainable Dojo

How do we create the economic foundation for karate's professional mission?

Finance is not the mission. Finance is one of the mission's resources.

A dojo is not primarily a business enterprise but a professional and human community. Yet every community needs a training hall, equipment, instructors, administration, development and a reserve. If the economic foundation of these is uncertain, sooner or later the professional mission itself is put at risk.

The aim of this book, therefore, is not to turn the karate leader into an accountant. The aim is for the leader to understand the financial reality of their own dojo, to recognise dangers in time, to be able to choose between the options, and to put money at the service of the professional mission.

The book follows an engineering approach: it breaks the system down into inputs, processes, outputs and feedback. At the same time, a dojo is not a machine. The elements of the system are people. That is why the numbers are worth something only when they are paired with human understanding, professional responsibility and a set of values.

The first part of the book builds up the thinking system of financial management. The second part provides practical tools: a budget, break-even calculation, retention and programme calculations, a liquidity plan, an investment decision sheet and a management dashboard.
